COVID-19: OGUN TRACE apprehends 345 traffic offenders, turned 972 vehicles across border towns

No fewer than 345 traffic offenders have been arrested between Saturday, April 4 and Friday, May 8, for violating goverments' directive on the ongoing COVID 19 pandemic lockdown in Ogun State, the Corps Commander and Chief Executive Officer, the state Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Corps (TRACE), Abdulfatai Olaseni Ogunyemi, has said.


He said about 972 vehicles have so farturned back across all border towns of the state to prevent inter-state violations order of goverment.

The TRACE boss disclosed this while briefing pressmen at the Corps headquarters in Abeokuta, the state capital on how long the agency had gone to compliment goverments' efforts in preventing the spread of the deadly virus in the state, said the agency have apprehended 77 motor vehicles and 268 motorcycles across the state for violating various offenses ranging from stay@home disobedience order, overloading vehicles, excessive speeding, dangerous driving, non-usage of seat belts/crash helmets, driving against traffic and use of phone on steering.

Commander Ogunyemi, said during the period, the agency also recorded a total number of 41 road traffic crashes, comprises of 15 private vehicles, 11 private buses, 18 commercial vehicles, 2 motorcycles, 12 commercial buses 4 medium trucks and 5 heavy duty trucks.
He stressed that eight out of the 41 reported crashes were fatal, 20 were serious and 13 remaining cases were minor.

According to the TRACE boss, during this period 212 persons were involved in road traffic crashes out of which 44 persons (30 males, 14 females) sustained various decree of injuries, while  11 persons (10 adults males, 1 female child) were killed and 157 persons were rescued unhurt due to prompt response to 26 emergency calls received by TRACE corps.

He said 46.3% of the road traffic crashes were caused by excessive speed, 24.40%, by dangerous driving, 8.64% by bad tyres, 7.28% by driving against traffic and 13.7% caused by other factors.

The TRACE Corps commander appreciate unflinching support of the traffic whistle blowers for their ever prompt information wherever there is crashes on the roads.
Commander Ogunyemi, thereby, appealing to the motoring public to obey all traffic rules as well as stay at home order, and of course remember that safety is the responsibility of all and sundry", the TRACE boss appealed.
